Follow my adventure of learning about teaching, the environment, and life.
hi.
My name is Lowery Pemberton. I am the Education Coordinator at Friends of the Rappahannock, a non-profit organization, where I am a non-formal, environmental educator. This career brings traditional teaching methods into an outdoor classroom; the perfect combination.
I am seeking teaching credentials because there is a drive within me to make a difference in the lives of others and teaching is the best way for me to express this passion. I believe that the University of Mary Washington is providing the tools and skills to turn my scientific knowledge into hands-on lessons that can make a difference in the world. I am qualified to teach Earth Science because of my Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Sciences and Specialization in Environmental and Biological Conservation from the University of Virginia and my experience teaching Pre-K through college students through my job as the Education Coordinator with Friends of the Rappahannock.
I have studied the material, I have taught students of all ages, but now is the time for me to gain the skills to be the most effective teacher I can be.
philosophy
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to be a facilitator of concepts. I will give students the perfect amount of information that will spark their interest to continue building upon the ideas and facts. I will be a resource for students to bounce ideas off of and a motivator to the students to push through barriers and reach their potential. I will serve as a mentor for the children and organize their experiences so that they want to continue learning. It is also important that I keep open communication with my colleagues and be sure to have interdisciplinary programs for the students. The students are to have an active role in their learning. Overall, my philosophy is rooted in experience. As a student, my best learning did not occur inside the cinder block walls but knee deep in marsh muck. Students deserve more than multiple choice tests and lectures; they deserve to be able to experience what they are expected to learn.
